Stand Alone Workshop

Below are some brief details of how a standalone Samba Drumming and Percussion workshop runs.

Just to say that all of my music sessions fit directly into the current primary school music curriculum incorporating the strands of listening, performing and composing. As well as exploring the elements of pulse - rhythm, dynamics, structure and tempo.

The session starts off with a brief history of samba music its Afro/Brazilian origins and where it can be found today.  We then continue with warm up exercises to get a little rhythm in everyone.  This is followed with all learning a rhythm.  I introduce everyone to the family of Samba instruments, their names and how they are played. They are all handed out and by the end of the session the children themselves are playing a rhythm on the samba drums.

In primary schools a workshop last about 90minutes except with junior infants where the time is reduced to 40-60 minutes. I provide all of the instruments with enough for around thirty students.  If there were one or two more, just let me know and I will make sure to have a couple of extra instruments with me. I can use a class room (Simply moving back tables and having the chairs in a semi circle) or a hall if the school has access to one. Each student will need a seat, a chair or bench is fine.
