Each week the children develop the skills required to play all of the instruments in Samba percussion. Learning one of the traditional Afro-Brazilian carnival rhythms of Samba Music culminating to a performance/presentation on the final day. The content will involve studying how the use of pulse, tempo and tones is used in a group context. Each class will learn concentrating/focusing techniques, ways of exploring individuality in musical expression as well as experiencing first hand ensemble music making and the many elements surrounding performance. Continually exploring the element of self esteem through personal achievement.
Providing opportunities for the understanding of listening, performing and composing in the world of music. Reinforcing the current primary school music curriculum.

___________
Why.
The majority of my workshops are one off sessions where within an hour or two I have an entire classroom playing a cohesive rhythm on Samba drums. This session is often repeated every 2-3 years. In recent
years I have had the opportunity to run 4,6 and 8 week programmes with classes where I get to develop the rhythms. Rather than having one unison groove, we separate the class into sections, each section learning its own rhythm and bring them all back together to create a traditional Brazilian Carnival rhythm.
How
This is a 6 week course that develops on a weekly basis. I start off with focusing on the children’s listening and concentration skills. Then we vocally learn each rhythm which is transferred onto the Samba drums. Each week we take new steps introducing intros and breaks as well as providing opportunities for the children to swap instruments and have a chance to play all of the grooves. The course is completed with a performance/presentation on the last day.
Where.
All that is required is a class room size space with a seat for each student. Moving desk back leaves us with plenty of space. In the past I have used G.P rooms, school halls, school libraries and external building which the school have access to.
